Van Wilder - Party Liaison on E4

This TV review was written 3 years, 5 months ago.

Tara Reid in Van WilderShowing on E4 on Monday 12th March at 9pm was the 2002 comedy classic ‘Van Wilder’ directed by Walt Becker and starring funnyman Ryan Reynolds as the main character Van Wilder himself and notorious party girl Tara Reid as his reluctant love interest Gwen Pearson.

Van Wilder is the son of a wealthy businessman (Tim Matheson) living the high life at college without having to worry about his fees and where his next handout is coming from.

However this soon changes when his father cuts off his money and decides its time that Van makes his own way in life, leaving him to come up with some other way of making enough to cover his tuition fees by himself.

Van soon decides he must turn to the only he thing he truly knows how to do - party!!!

He becomes a party planner and begins to charge the high school geeks with no clue about the practicalities and this involves vast amounts of cash in return for throwing them one of his legendary parties.

The business soon takes off and Van is in his element, but he begins to get caught up when he spots the girl of his dreams ‘Gwen Pearson’ and tries everything in his power to woo her.

This is without doubt a laugh out loud comedy, but it also features some of Ryan Reynolds’ trademark cringeworthy and often disgusting scenes that although often very humorous, are sometimes a little over the top!

A perfect example of an over the top scene is when the ‘éclairs’ are sent to the fraternity brothers. I still can’t watch that scene without feeling ill, and I’m sure most of you probably felt the same!

That sort of thing is what made the film get such high ratings though, it really does go for the ‘Shock Factor’ and manages to pull it off with ease, whilst still remaining a genuinely funny film.

Van Wilder – Party Liaison is definitely worth a watch, but keep in mind that if you are easily offended then it may not be quite the movie for you. However, if you like your humour slapstick, offensive and crude then this is probably going to be your kind of film!
