Freddy Vs Jason on Film 4

This TV review was written 1 year, 9 months ago.

Freddy vs JasonIf you have been watching Film 4 lately you may have caught Saturday’s showing of one of the latest and most anticipated horror sequels ever. Providing a great mix of comedy and slasher horror Freddy Vs Jason is a movie that horror fans had been dying (excuse the pun) to see made for years.

What has been created is a kind of bizarre world that combines Jason Voorhees reality and Freddy Kruger’s all in one.

With the townsfolk now plying their unsuspecting children with dream suppressant pills to keep Freddy at bay he must find another way to break out of the Purgatory he finds himself trapped in. Of course that’s where Jason comes in, Freddy manages to tap into his energy and get Jason to do his nasty work for a while, once again installing fear into the hearts of teenagers and adults alike allowing him to break into “Or world” once more and stalk the dreams and reality of his chosen victims.

The best thing about this movie has to be the fact that it gives the fans exactly what they wanted. They didn’t want to see some long drawn out storyline, instead they preferred to see Jason and Freddy fight long and hard to see who would come out on top.

The movie certainly delivers, with some great scenes involving Jason and Freddy together it is almost more comedic rather than scary to watch as they tear chunks out of each other in some brutal and yet fun shots.

The supporting cast in the movie is made up largely of “trendy” young teenagers including Destiny’s Child star Kelly Rowland in her feature debut and Katharine Isabelle (Ginger Snaps) alongside Monica Keena and Jason Ritter. Robert Englund once again resumes his role as Freddy (no-one could do it better) and we see Ken Kirzinger a well respected stuntman take on the role of Jason.

Freddy vs JasonFreddy Vs Jason definitely pays homage to the 80’s slashers we associate them with, bringing back that almost cheesy dialogue and a storyline that although manages to keep us entertained isn’t exactly going to win any awards for originality, but let?s face it, did we really expect it to?!

In my opinion the movie is well worth a watch for the Freddy Vs Jason fight scenes alone, as well as the wonderfully OTT ending which is not to be missed. In short, if you are a fan of horror and loved Friday The 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street you have no reason to dislike this movie!

Full cast list for Freddy vs Jason: Alex Green, Alistair Abell, Anysha Berthot, Blake Mawson, Brendan Fletcher, Brent Chapman, Chris Gauthier, Chris Marquette, Claire Riley, Colby Johannson, Colton Shock, David Kopp, Eileen Pedde, Evangeline Lilly, Gary Chalk, Jacqueline Stewart, Jamie Mayo, Jason Ritter, Jesse Hutch, Joëlle Antonissen, Katharine Isabelle, Kelly Rowland, Ken Kirzinger, Kevin Hansen, Kimberley Warnat, Kirsti Forbes, Kyle Labine, Laura Boddington, Lochlyn Munro, Monica Keena, Odessa Munroe, Oscar Gutiérrez, Paula Shaw, Robert Englund, Robert Shaye, Sarah-Anne Hepher, Sean Tyler Foley, Sharon Peters, Spencer Doduk, Spencer Stump, Taryn McCullock, Tom Butler, Tony Willett, Viv Leacock, Zack Ward.

Changes Ahead for Eastenders (Spoilers)

This TV review was written 1 year, 9 months ago.

We’ve had a dramatic time of it in Eastenders recently!

We saw Max almost get buried alive by his long suffering wife Tanya who after having a shock change of heart went running back to her husband’s aid dragging him out of the shallow grave she had attempted to leave him to die in.

After an emotional heart to heart Max finally shows some sign of remorse and agrees to leave the square so that Tanya can get her head together and take care of her kids.

One thing she doesn’t count on however is just how persistent Shaun will be in order to keep the woman he has fallen head over heels for. Does Tanya know what she’s getting herself into by shunning psycho Shaun’s advances? Only time will tell.

There seems to be more changes ahead in Albert Square over the next few weeks!

We saw Pat and Peggy away on a girl’s day out only to be interrupted by two very familiar faces in the form of Ricky and Diane Butcher. The two of them immediately realised that something must be wrong with Frank. They were proven to be correct in their suspicions when as the week’s episodes progressed we learned that Frank had died. This prompts the return of some very familiar faces.

Returning back to the square for the funeral is the conniving character Janine, and when it’s soon proved to be possible that she may have her own ulterior motives for being there Peggy is determined to expose her. Along with Ricky and Diane we also see Bianca make a shock return to the square with her 4 kids in tow! Dubbed as the Jackson 5 the family are sure to create havoc once again in the square and I wonder how long it will take before Ricky and Bianca get back together?

Their fiery relationship was once the talk of the town, and surely the writers will be planning some big storylines to see the two of them reunite. I don’t think it will be plain sailing though as Ricky seems to have grown a bit more of a backbone this time round and maybe less likely to be at Bianca’s beck and call.

Keep tuned into Eastenders all week, the action kicks off tonight (Tuesday April 1st) and we will see plenty of familiar faces make their temporary and not so temporary returns to the show!

The Reaper - TV Show

This TV review was written 1 year, 9 months ago.

Missy Peregrym as Andi in ReaperThe Reaper is a new show to come to E4 recently and despite a bit of a slow start, it seems to have taken off really well! It stars Bret Harrison as Sam, who has spent his life wondering why his parents let him have such an easy ride in life.

He seems to be able to get away with doing pretty much whatever he likes and is generally happy to take the easy way out of any situation.

Sam eventually drops out of school and winds up in a boring deadbeat job and wastes his time drooling over his beautiful work colleague Andi Prendergast (Played by Missy Peregrym) along with his best friend Bert “Sock” Wysocki (Tyler Labine) they think they have the perfect life as a pair of slackers.

Things soon take a dramatic turn of fate however, when on his 21st birthday Sam learns a shocking secret about his past that will change his life forever.

It is revealed that Sam’s parents sold his sold to the devil (Played by Ray Wise) and now his oh so easy life is about to get a whole lot more complicated when the devil comes a knockin’ and tells Sam that he must obey his wishes from now on, and become a bounty hunter, finding and trapping the souls who have escaped from hell.

Sam reluctantly accepts his fate, and takes his first mission along with the help of his best friend ‘Sock’ and his ex girlfriend Josie. The gang soon begin to realize the importance of what they are doing and armed with a different ‘Vessel’ each week to suck up the souls of evil (these range from a dirt devil to a toaster throughout various episodes!) Sam finally begins to embrace life as ‘The Reaper’.

I must admit, I wasn’t too sure about this show when it first started; I had visions of it being cheesy and over the top. Whilst it is both of those things at times, it still manages to be genuinely funny and often very dramatic! The fact that each week Sam must use a different Vessel to trap his victim’s souls is fantastic; when he gets the dirt devil vacuum cleaner on the first episode you realize that this has potential to be truly genius TV!

As the episodes have progressed this has turned out to be an innovative and exciting series that looks set to become a cult classic. Initially booked for a 13 episode run, I’m hoping to see more series being made in the future and looking forward to finding out what lies ahead for Sam and his friends!

A great mix of comedy and drama that’s definitely worth checking out! Catch it weekdays on E4.

Full cast list for The Reaper: Allison Hossack, Andrew Airlie, Bret Harrison, Christine Willes, Colby Johannson, Donavon Stinson, Jake D. Smith, Jessica Stroup, Jill Teed, Ken Marino, Kyle Switzer, Marci T. House, Michael Ian Black, Missy Peregrym, Ray Wise, Rick Gonzalez, Scott Patey, Tyler Labine, Valarie Rae Miller.

Dexter comes to ITV

This TV review was written 1 year, 10 months ago.

Michael C Hall as Dexter MorganThe hit American TV show Dexter has finally made its way to ITV and be warned, its highly addictive viewing!

Michael C Hall (remember him as the uptight undertaker from 6 feet under?) plays Dexter, a top police department forensics expert who specialises in tracing blood trails and everything related.

Having solved some of the top cases it comes as quite a surprise to us as viewers when we learn that in his spare time Dexter has an unhealthy obsession with murder.

Unlike your typical serial killer Dexter only kills people he feels deserves to die, murderers, criminals and the scum of the city are his targets and he takes great pleasure in tracking them down.

As a troubled child Dexter was adopted, his adoptive father (and police officer) soon figured out his homicidal tendencies and encouraged him to channel them towards more constructive methods, suggesting that if he MUST kill and cannot fight the urge, then to target those who have slipped through the cracks of justice.

It’s definitely hard not to like Dexter, and the morals of this show are challenging to figure out! We find ourselves rooting for Dexter as he chooses the lowest of the low as his victims and by doing so he almost becomes a hero.

However Dexter himself lacks some of the normal human emotions that you and I would feel, he struggles with intimacy issues in particular, and except for his closeness to his sister the only other relationship he has is with his ‘Girlfriend’ Rita, the victim of a brutal rape who also has her own issues where intimacy is concerned, making them appear as almost the perfect match for each other.

Of course, Rita knows nothing of Dexter’s dark secret and uses him as almost a cover to make herself feel more normal. Fans of the TV series ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ or ‘Angel’ will recognise Rita as Julie Benz who played the vampire Darla. Like Michael C Hall she also has somewhat of a cult following in the entertainment industry making this a hard show not to want to watch!

I love the fact that you never quite know where you stand with Dexter, is he good or bad? Are we supposed to like him quite as much as we do? So many questions are posed and yet the storylines flow seamlessly and are gripping from start to finish.

If you like psychological drama series then Dexter is definitely one you should be checking out, with a great cast, superb plotlines and some decent special effects it’s not to be missed!

Dancing on Ice 2008 - ITV 1

This TV review was written 1 year, 10 months ago.

Suzanne ShawOne of my favourite shows to watch on a Sunday night had to be ‘Dancing on Ice’ it gets better and better every year with the quality of skating improving each time.

Presented by Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield and featuring some great performances and choreography from top Ice Skating professionals Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean it was one of the most watched shows at the weekends.

The final celebrities left in the competition this time around were:

  • Hollyoaks star Chris Fountain (he was my favourite to win)
  • retired tennis player Greg Rusedski (who is wonderfully clumsy on the ice)
  • pop star Gareth Gates
  • singer Suzanne Shaw
  • Coronation Street star Zaraah Abrahams who was a newcomer to the competition after Michael Underwood broke his ankle.

As I watched each week, I became quite fond of all the contestants left in the competition, they all put everything they had into their performances and even Greg who is hilarious on the ice still manages to push his performance to the max every week. The judges were often brutally honest and in my opinion gave quite low scores this year for fantastic performances, Suzanne Shaw’s routine one week sparked fury between several of the judges and rightly so after Suzanne was given stupidly low marks for an amazing performance.

The judge panel itself is made up of the following people:

  • Robin Cousins - One of Britain’s best individual skater’s.
  • Nicky Slater - Competed as a pro ice skater with resident judge Karen Barber.
  • Karen Barber - Resident Coach and appeared as Nicky Slater’s partner in the Olympics.
  • Jason Gardiner - Choreographer, actor and dancer Jason is the judge with the razor sharp tongue who we all love to hate.
  • Ruthie Henshall - Olivier award winner who has starred in many west end musicals.

It was great to see Torvill and Dean once again performing some stunning routines together and equally interesting to watch as they take the skaters under their wing and put them through their paces during the week in preparation for the live show.

Wedding Crashers on Film 4

This TV review was written 1 year, 10 months ago.

Owen Wilson in Wedding CrashersOwen Wilson and Vince Vaughn star in this brilliantly over the top comedy about two men who spend all of their free time crashing other peoples wedding parties.

The basic aim of this and their twisted logic is that weddings are the perfect place to meet women and along with the free food and party atmosphere it never seems to grow tiresome for the two of them.

Things soon begin to change however when the pair crash an exclusive bash and meet up with treasury secretary William Cleary (played brilliantly by Christopher Walken) and his attractive young daughters Gloria (Isla Fisher) and Claire (Amy McAdams).

Vince Vaughn in Wedding CrashersWhilst Jeremy has to attempt to fend off the advances of Gloria, a completely crazy and immature but gorgeous young woman John finds himself falling head over heels for the other daughter Claire, who seems to be feeling the same way about him until she reveals that she has a boyfriend. Determined to find out more about Claire and win her over John and Jeremy manage to bag themselves an invite to the family home where they end up in various different uncomfortable and often (in Johns case at least) embarrassing situations along the way!

This is definitely one of those films that you can just sit down and watch without having to concentrate or worrying that if you nip out to grab a drink you will have missed a vital plot point. It’s a simple, great fun comedy that has some genuinely hilarious laugh out loud moments that will appeal to both men and women.

Most of the fun revolves around Gloria and Jeremy, Isla Fisher does a fantastic job of playing this clingy, kooky and downright scary girl whose attraction to poor Jeremy never gives him a minute’s peace.

There is a definite chemistry between the two of them that really works and manages top be sweet and jaw droppingly funny at the same time! The romantic element of the film is more focused on John and Claire as they start to grow closer despite her overbearing and often chauvinistic boyfriend.

Christopher Walken delivers a flawless performance as usual and is a real asset to the film there is also a great cameo from Will Ferrell which is worth watching out for. All in all Wedding Crashers is the perfect movie to watch when you’ve finished work and just want to sit down and chill out!

Full cast list for Wedding Crashers: Al Cerullo, Amber Matthews, Arnold Chun, Beau Bowden, Betsy Ames, Brad Newman, Bradley Cooper, Camille Anderson, Carolyn Robertson, Carson Elrod, Chao Li Chi, Charles Kahlenberg, Christina Lindley, Christopher Walken, Cindy Taylor, Claudia Barroso, David Conrad, Diora Baird, Dwight Yoakam, Dylan James Turner, Ellen Albertini Dow, Frank Ray Perilli, Geoff Stults, Gill Garci, Henry Gibson, Holly Traister, Ina Haybaeck-Rogers, Irene Roseen, Isla Fisher, Ivana Bozilovic, Jacob Newman, James Carville, James McDonnell, Jane Seymour, Jed Bernard, Jeff Fields, Jennifer Alden, Jennifer Massey, Jesse Henecke, Jewel Donohue, Joe Koons, John G. Echo Beach and Moving Wallpaper on ITV

This TV review was written 1 year, 10 months ago.

Every now and again a concept for a show comes along that has the potential to be truly amazing. When I first heard about a new show being planned on ITV I must confess to being really excited about it.

You have all probably seen the show by now, its called Echo Beach, a soap opera set in Cornwall. Although this doesn?t sound like anything new at first glance, when you hear about the show that airs before hand called Moving Wallpaper it all starts to seem much more clever.

You see, Moving Wallpaper is the fictional show following the (fictional) production stages of Echo Beach. Lead by director Jonathan Pope (played absolutely brilliantly by Ben Miller) it shows the fake “behind the scenes” info that we don’t usually get to see. The whole “Show within a show” concept really appealed to me so I made a commitment to watch the first couple of episodes to see how it actually worked.

I was very pleasantly surprised with how good “Moving Wallpaper” was. The cast were brilliant and Ben Miller gets funnier with each episode. Its also great fun to spot the “in jokes” which later go on to appear in Echo Beach itself airing straight after it.

Echo Beach has a generally good cast, Jason Donovan (Daniel) and Martine McCutcheon (Susan) seem quite natural in their roles and Hugo Spears does a brilliant job of playing the rich, controlling character Mark Penwarden, Susan’s husband. Some of the younger cast do let the show down a little bit with their acting skills but I hold on to hope that this will all be ironed out in time as they gradually become a bit more natural on screen.

All in all, I was pleasantly surprised with how the show has turned out and although I’m currently enjoying Moving Wallpaper much more than the main Soap Echo Beach right now I’d love to see Echo Beach take off as a soup opera in its own rights. With a few more dramatic storylines and good plot twists I think it could have the definite potential to do just that!

Full cast list for Echo Beach and Moving Wallpaper: Ben Miller, Chandeep Uppal, Christian Cooke, Dave Lamb, Ed Speleers, Elizabeth Berrington, Gwyneth Powell, Hannah Lederer-Alton, Hugo Speer, James Lance, Jason Donovan, Johnny Briggs, Jonathan Readwin, Laura Greenwood, Louise Rose, Lucy Liemann, Marcus Patric, Mark Frost, Martine McCutcheon, Naomi Ryan, Patrick Adolphe, Perdita Avery, Raquel Cassidy, Sarah Hadland, Sinead Keenan, Steven Kynman, Susie Amy.

Skins Series 2 on E4

This TV review was written 1 year, 11 months ago.

Mitch Hewer as Maxxie Oliver and Bill Bailey as WalterI recently watched the whole of series one of Skins on Channel 4’s 4OD (4 on demand) online service. It’s actually pretty cool, you can sign up for the service and then stream the episodes of series one of Skins live on your media player or download them to watch later. Some of the programs on there you have to pay for but Skins was free to watch so having completely caught up I was eagerly awaiting series 2 which has just recently kicked off.

People who use myspace may have already seen the first episode in four parts over there, but I was determined to wait and watch it in all its glory on E4. I’m pleased to say that it has most definitely been worth the wait!

Last series ended with Tony seriously injured after his accident, we pick up a little while later in series 2 and Tony is now out of hospital but has very little control over his own body and is a far cry from the character we saw last year! He needs help with pretty much everything and feels demoralised and belittled having to rely on his friends for help constantly.

Michelle and Sid are avoiding him, which is hardly surprising the way things were left last series and Sid is pining for Cassie who is away in Scotland with her family, I’m not sure if this is permanent or not but I hope she makes a comeback as she was a huge part of the show. Her overuse of the word Wow which seemed annoying at first is surprisingly sorely missed this time around.

Brilliant comedian Bill Bailey makes his first appearance in the show as Maxxie?s dad. He is perfectly cast in this role, and being from Bristol himself makes him appear right at home with the other characters. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing more of him as the series progresses.

We didn’t see much of the other characters for the rest of the show, but obviously the main focus had to be on Tony after the accident, I wonder how quickly the writers will have him recover, the show does seem a little strange without him leading the way forward, organizing the partying etc but it was good to see Maxxie get more screen time for once.

Overall I was really impressed with the first episode of Skins series 2 and if they can keep it up this series could be just as good, if not better than the first one!

Full cast list for Skins: April Pearson, Arabella Weir, Ben Lloyd-Hughes, Bill Bailey, Daniel Kaluuya, Danielle Jadelyn, Danny Dyer, Dev Patel, Geoffrey Hughes, Georgina Moffat, Giles Thomas, Hannah Murray, Harry Enfield, Johann Benet, John Weldon, Joseph Dempsie, Kaya Scodelario, Larissa Wilson, Mike Bailey, Mitch Hewer, Morwenna Banks, Nicholas Hoult, Peter Capaldi, Robert Wilfort, Siwan Morris, Stephen Walters, Tom Payne.

Napoleon Dynamite on Film4

This TV review was written 2 years, 1 month ago.

The 2004 cult comedy Napoleon Dynamite was shown on Film 4 recently and I just couldn’t resist watching it again. It stars the absolutely hilarious John Heder as Napoleon, a dysfunctional, slightly arrogant and very geeky teenager who isn’t really taken very seriously by anyone at school or at home.

John Heder as Napoleon DynamiteThe film is a refreshing take on high school life, and rather than simply being your usual teen comedy that relies on cheap laughs we have Napoleon who brings a much more dry sarcastic humour with the best thing being he just doesn’t know how funny he actually is.

This film shot John Heder to stardom after fans fell in love with this quirky and naive character he was portraying. He has since gone on to star in hit movies such as Blades of Glory, Just Like Heaven and even voiced a very funny animated chicken in the movie “Surf?s Up” alongside Shia LaBeouf (Another of America’s top actors right now).

Some of the scenes from Napoleon Dynamite have now become cult classics on the internet; I’m sure almost everyone has that dancing emoticon or a video clip of Napoleon doing his unforgettably ridiculous dancing on stage at the school election, it just went on for so long and included so many crazy moves that you cant help but find yourself laughing at some point during the whole thing!

Napoleon’s friend Pedro played by Efren Ramirez was also a particular highlight to the movie and the friendship between the two of them was really fun to watch.

This is definitely not a film that will appeal to everyone, it’s had its fair share of both positive and negative reviews and I think its one that you will start watching and either love it instantly or be so bored that you switch it off straight away. My wife and son found the embarrassment factor to be unbearable and couldn’t watch it, but I was fixated the whole way through.

I’d definitely recommend giving it a go if you are willing to try something a bit different from the norm and like offbeat comedies. It’s worth it for John Heder’s performance alone trust me!Full cast list for Napoleon Dynamite: Aaron Demke, Aaron Ruell, Adam Higley, Alisha Wakley, Alison Downs, Allison Gamble, Alyssa Harrison, Amanda Austin, Amber Larsen, Amy Christiansen, Annette Jensen, Arianna Crosland, Arlando Larsen, Arturo De Silva, Ashely Buck, Ashley Jackson, Audrey Hinricks, Becky Demke, Becky Yates, Bracken Johnson, Braden Hablin, Brady Stokes, Brandon Ostler, Brett Taylor, Brian Davis, Brian Petersen, Brianne Richardson, Brigham Wilcox, Brittany Foster, Brittney Cole, Brooke Beckstead, Cara Alder, Carmen Brady, Cassie Galloway, Chantel Talbot, Charles Fetzer, Charles Sparrow, Cherone Call, Cheryl Hobbs, Christina Child, Christina McBride, Christina Nicholas, Cierra Talbot, Cindy Biggs, Cody Abrams, Cody Hobbs, Colton Hirschi, Connie Owen, Cory Waters, Crystal Wright, Dakotah Gordon, Dale Critchlow, Damon Hull, Daniel Brewer, David Sharp, Dayne Keller, Debbie Hugie, Derik Atkinson, Diedrich Bader, Eden Hamblin, Efren Ramirez, Elaina Horne, Eldean Holliday, Eli Wheeler, Elisabeth North, Elizabeth Miklavcic, Ellen Dubin, Emily Gamer, Emily Tyndall, Evan Harris, Frederick Atkins, Gloria Talbot, Hannah Gibby, Hayley Bowen, Haylie Duff, Heather Benson, Isaac Demke, J.C. Hide and Seek starring Dakota Fanning and Robert DeNiro was shown on Film4 Friday 14th December.

Now this is a film that critics have completely slammed, with most saying that it was absolute rubbish. Well as usual, I completely disagree with what they think and I thoroughly enjoyed the film.

Granted, it’s not one of those movies that will blow you away completely, but it has a decent pace, a great cast and some very good twists and turns all the way through which makes it really entertaining.

Robert DeNiro plays David Callaway, a psychiatrist and father to a young girl called Emily. After her mother’s sudden death Emily creates a seemingly imaginary friend named Charlie who always gets the blame for anything strange that happens in the home.

Soon however, things begin to take a more sinister twist and the events surrounding the family become increasingly serious. Could Charlie be more than just an Imaginary friend and if so what exactly does he want?

Both Robert DeNiro and Dakota Fanning manage to give great performances and it’s interesting to watch how young Dakota measures up to be equally as good in the movie as DeNiro and I have to admit that I think she even outshone him in places!

We are used to seeing Dakota play the cute, happy go lucky kid in most of her recent movies but Hide and Seek sees her take on an entirely different role completely. Gone is the trademark long blonde hair and in its place is a short brown lank look that completely adds to the intensity of the character.

Although the film is definitely a bit of a slow burner, if you persevere through the sometimes slow start you will be rewarded with a tense and psychological movie that really knows how to play on the small details and leave you guessing.

I enjoyed the ending of the movie, and didn’t see it coming until just before the big reveal, but it has been openly criticised by others for being a little predictable in places. All I can advise is that you watch it for yourself and enjoy this creepy psychological horror without listening to critics and without taking it too seriously.

Robert DeNiro is one of my favourite actors and after recently seeing him in Stardust it is refreshing to see that he can still shine, even in such a different role to those we usually see him in!

Full cast list for the 2005 film Hide and Seek: Amy Irving, Brendan Sexton III, Dakota Fanning, David Chandler, Dylan Baker, Elisabeth Shue, Famke Janssen, Jacqueline Lovell, Jake Dylan Baumer, Josh Flitter, Melissa Leo, Molly Grant Kallins, Robert De Niro, Robert John Burke, Rose Pasquale, Stewart Summers.

Heroes Season 1 Part 2 on DVD

This TV review was written 2 years, 2 months ago.

Masi Oka as Hiro Nakamura in HeroesHeroes is constantly growing in popularity week by week as episodes air, and for those who haven’t managed to keep up to date with the TV episodes you will be pleased to know that Heroes Season 1 part 2 is due out on December 10th on DVD!

The second half of Season One holds plenty more thrills and spills and we see the Heroes learn more about their own individual abilities as well as the links they all have with each other.

All of this combined makes for an explosive and dramatic ending that fans will never forget.

Matt Parker is still continuing to fine tune his ability to hear peoples thoughts, proving to be an asset to the police force and to the future of the Heroes.

The main man Hiro (my favourite character in the whole series) also learns more about his time travel abilities and together with his best friend Ando they uncover some of the biggest secrets in the whole Heroes plotline.

Peter continues to worry about his part in the great explosion that has been predicted by artist Isaac Mendez and the brilliantly menacing Sylar, with his equally manacing eyebrows, moves forward in his quest to gain the Heroes powers for himself.

Heroes is undoubtedly one of the most gripping shows on TV right now, and the DVD sets are definitely a ‘Must Have’ for your collection. The freedom of having both parts on DVD is great, as you can re watch them and check out the extras that you don’t get with the TV episodes.

The chemistry between the characters is growing with each show, and I’m looking forward to seeing all of the Heroes all work together and start to fully find out about each others existence.

This is out just in time for Christmas so you just know that everyone will be wanting Series one Part 2 as their stocking filler. I believe the complete Series 1 is also out to buy soon for those who haven’t already bought the first half, so really it’s a simple choice, if you haven’t bought the first half of Season 1 yet then you need the whole series in one box, otherwise buy this box of DVD’s right now!

Complete cast list for the TV series Heroes: Adair Tishler, Adrian Pasdar, Ali Larter, Ashlee Gillespie, Ashley Crow, Ben Murray, Bill Fagerbakke, Brian Tarantina, Christopher Eccleston, Clea DuVall, Colby French, Cristine Rose, Dana Davis, Danielle Savre, Darryl Chan, Deirdre Quinn, Dutch Johnson, Elizabeth Lackey, Eric Roberts, Erick Avari, Eriko Tamura, Eugene Byrd, Garrett Masuda, Geno Monteiro, George Takei, Greg Grunberg, Hayden Panettiere, Jack Coleman, Jackson Wurth, James Kyson Lee, Javin Reid, Jayma Mays, Jessalyn Gilsig, Jimmy Jean-Louis, Josh Clark, Justin Evans, Karl T. Wright, Karri Turner, Kevin Chamberlin, Leonard Roberts, Link Baker, Malcolm McDowell, Mark Allan Stewart, Mark Nearing, Masi Oka, Matt Lanter, Matthew John Armstrong, Michael Maury, Milo Ventimiglia, Missi Pyle, Missy Peregrym, Nicole Bilderback, Noah Gray-Cabey, Nora Zehetner, Paula Newsome, Randall Bentley, Rena Sofer, Richard Roundtree, Rick Peters, Ryan Smith, Sakina Jaffrey, Sally Champlin, Santiago Cabrera, Sara Solomon, Sendhil Ramamurthy, Shalim Ortiz, Shishir Kurup, Stacy Haiduk, Stana Katic, Tawny Cypress, Thomas Dekker, Tohoru Masamune, Zachary Quinto.

The Vicious Circle on Film4

This TV review was written 2 years, 2 months ago.

On a Sunday afternoon in late November when the chill has started to set in and you’re feeling a bit coldy, a black and white thriller starring John Mills is the perfect way of working off a big roast lunch.

The Vicious Circle features John Mills as Doctor Howard Latimer, a Harley Street doctor whose supposed friend turns out to be the head of a nasty German gang and who frames him for the murder of an undercover policewoman.

The story owes a lot to the style of John Buchan’s The Thirty Nine Steps – an action packed romp where you are better of not lingering to think too long over the many twists and turns that the plot takes, but instead just sip a cup of hot tea, eat a toasted and buttered muffin, and enjoy the ride. Preferably wearing a pair of slippers.

The stars of this film are the treasure trove of quality British actors who you feel so lucky to experience all on screen at the same time, including Wilfred Hyde-White and Roland Culver, while Derek Farr, Lionel Jeffries and Mervyn Johns put in admirable performances.

There were a couple of really enjoyable scenes for me, one being when John Mills opens the door to his house revealing background scenery that is so unrealistically painted that it is just plain funny.

But my favourite scene was when the baddy tries to escape from London Airport at the end of the film and a sign lights up in the plane saying “Fasten Lap Straps”. It is so easy to forget what must have happened for society to settle on the phrase “seat belts”. We spent an enjoyable couple of minutes considering how different our world would have been if we had standardised the names as “tummy bands”, “chair restrainers” or “waist leashes” instead.

Full cast list for 1957 film The Vicious Circle: David Williams, Derek Farr, Diane Lambert, Gillian Moran, Hal Osmond, John Gordon, John Mills, Lionel Jeffries, Lisa Daniely, Mervyn Johns, Noelle Middleton, René Ray, Roland Culver, Wilfrid Hyde-White.

Fonejacker on Channel 4

This TV review was written 2 years, 2 months ago.

Fonejacker is the latest hit Channel 4 show, created  and played by “Kayvan Novak” an actor who has turned his hand to comedy of a different nature, Kayvan has starred in many UK TV shows including Holby City, and Spooks and has also starred in Syriana as Arash not to mention voicing a handful of video games such as Perfect Dark Zero and Kameo.  It is in the latest field, voice acting, in which Novak excels, leading to the brilliance that is “Fonejacker”.

Terry Tibbs from FonejackerFonejacker is at its core a phone prank show, which sounds puerile at first, but it is truly funny.  Novak plays the prankster and brings on all manner of amazing voices and noises to wind up various companies and private individuals in the UK, but best of all are the crazy animations they place on the screen during these audible conversations, showing various strange characters conversing.

The show succeeds because of the characters, and these include, in no particular order, the Doovde Man, a man of Asian origin who finds it difficult to pronounce various English words, such as LCD TV (Luck-de-toov), DVD (Doove-de) and JVC (Joove-ka).  Terry Tibbs is a bald cockney wheeler dealer, who will try and buy anything from free ads but only for much less than you want to sell it, with catchphrases that include”Beautiful, Beautiful” and “talk to me”.  Pet Mouse rings up a pet shop, and asks for the best advice on how to kill the pet cat using cat nip, very funny.

George Agdgdgwngo is a Nigerian scamster who will try anything and everything to get your bank account details over the phone.  He claims to be from your bank, but when you ask which bank that is, he dodges the question, he offers millions of dollars in prizes but after the exchange rate they are only small amounts in pounds, George is probably one of the best characters in the show.

In the flat rental hotline, Novak set up a hotline in various newsagents and as and when prospective renters ring up they are put straight through to the fonejacker, who annoys them by mishearing the calls i.e. “I would like a one bedroom flat in Brighton”, and the taped message replies “you require a three bedroom lesbian house share in Wales”. The call usually ends up in the caller swearing and hanging up in despair.

In the internet serving providing sketch an Indian ISP rings up various prospective customers, but for some reason the offers get more expensive not cheaper as the call goes on.

Fonejacker is not for everyone, but I would recommend giving it a go, most people who have watched it have liked it, and I personally think it’s brilliant. Fonejacker is repeated regularly on the Channel 4 network, and a new series should be with us soon.

Crime Scene Wild illegal animal trading on Sky 524 and Virgin TV 215

This TV review was written 2 years, 3 months ago.

Steve Galster and an endangered bear cubCrime Scene Wild is on Animal Planet on Sky 524 and Virgin TV 215, Monday nights at 10pm and lets you take a look inside the world of illegal animal trading

Trade in protected wildlife is big business, second only to drugs in size, being worth more than £5 billion a year. The rarest species are most at risk such as caged bears which are milked for their bile, tigers hunted for their skins and bones for tiger wine (yummy!), elephants poached for ivory, gorillas for meat and sharks simply butchered alive.

Many species are tortured to the brink of extinction, but now the Crime Scene Wild team are there to protect these otherwise helpless creatures from mans greed. Steve Galster patrols the homeland of the poachers and tries to bring them to justice. Steve uses forensics and DNA technology to wage war against the animal traders.

Batman Returns on Film 4

This TV review was written 2 years, 4 months ago.

Batman Returns is my favourite out of all the Batman sequels so far. It was released in 1992 and I love the dark, gothic feel to the film that was superbly created by Tim Burton. Every inch of the movie looks and feels like a classic Tim Burton movie should, and you can really tell that Burton has let his imagination run wild this time which in my opinion it was a very bold, daring way to go for a much awaited sequel to the original Batman movie.

Michelle Pfeiffer in Batman ReturnsMichelle Pfeiffer was brilliant as Catwoman; she turns from a timid shy young woman who lives alone with only a cat for company into a PVC clad vixen who is definitely not to be messed with! Pfeiffer completely plays up to this role and seems to relish the opportunity to get her teeth into something different from her usual romantic comedies and who can blame her?!

Danny Devito is unforgettable as ‘The Penguin’ a strange half penguin half man type creature that was abandoned by his parents as a child. He steals most of the scenes with ease and adds to that dark and strange eeriness of the entire movie. Of course, nothing will ever compare to Jack Nicholson as ‘The Joker’ as the villain of the original Batman movie, he was amazing.

The only thing that I did feel slightly lets this movie down is Michael Keaton. Whilst he is great as Bruce Wayne, when he dons his leather suit to become Batman he seems to lack that superhero presence that he had in the first movie. Maybe it’s just me but I felt like he didn’t quite put everything he had into the performance this time round. I’m sure that most of you have probably seen this movie dozens of times before but if like me it’s been a while since you last caught it then try and catch it on one of Film4’s repeats and re live the film in all its glory.

Full cast list for Batman Returns: Adam Drescher, Andrew Bryniarski, Anna Katarina, Anthony De Longis, Ashley Tillman, Biff Yeager, Bobby Bell, Branscombe Richmond, Cal Hoffman, Cheryl Moore, Christopher Walken, Cristi Conaway, Danny DeVito, Debbie Lee Carrington, Denise Killpack, Diane Salinger, Doug Jones, Elizabeth Sanders, Erik Onate, Erika Andersch, Felix Silla, Frank DiElsi, Gregory Scott Cummins, Henry Kingi, Jan Hooks, Joan Giammarco, Joan Jurige, Joey DePinto, John Strong, Lisa Guerrero, Margarita Fernández, Michael Gough, Michael Keaton, Michael Murphy, Michelle Pfeiffer, Neal Lerner, Niki Botelho, Pat Hingle, Paul Reubens, Rick Zumwalt, Robert Gossett, Rosie O’Connor, Sean Whalen, Steffanie Siebrand, Steve Witting, Steven Brill, Stuart Lancaster, Susan Rossitto, Travis McKenna, Tyler House, Vincent Schiavelli.

Meerkat Manor on Animal Planet on Sky 525 and Virgin TV 215

This TV review was written 2 years, 4 months ago.

Meerkat Manor

Meerkat Manor is Noel Gallagher’s favourite TV show. I reckon that’s because this family of adorable animals has more family squabbles than Albert Square. Compulsive fans have become utterly devoted to the meerkats as they follow the ups and downs of The Whiskers, a family of meerkats living in the Kalahari Desert. Living underground and eating a diet of worms, insects and lizards you wouldn’t expect this to make riveting TV, but the day to day family issues they confront has turned this TV series into a surprise hit!

At the end of the last season of Meerkat Manor, the Whiskers family faced a long winter, and Mozart the meerkat’s babies had been killed by an enemy gang of Meerkats called The Commandos. Now back for a third series on Animal Planet, with new characters, and stories, the Whiskers face a new gang, the Zappa tribe, who are like the neighbours from hell!

Running through to 26th September, on weekdays at 8:30pm, you need to have a strong constitution and a handy box of Kleenex because the news isn’t good for all of the members of the Whiskers family.

You can find out more at www.animalplanet.co.uk/meerkat_manor

You can also see some fascinating videos of Meerkat Manor here and here

The meerkat families: Whiskers, featuring Flower and Zaphod, Lazuli, led by Cazanna and Big Si, Gattaca, Commandoes, led by Hannibal and Nikita, Zappa, led by Punk and Starsky. Meerkat Manor is narated by Bill Nighy in the UK, Sean Astin in the US and Mike Goldman in Australia.

Warner Brothers TV on Virgin Media and BT Vision

This TV review was written 2 years, 4 months ago.

There is now another very good reason to move over to the new Virgin Media and BT Vision on demand TV services because you will be able to dip into the great quality series shown on the new Warner Brothers TV (WBTV) channel.

Warner Brothers TV (WBTV) logo

You already know I’m an ER Junkie – and WBTV will be showing ER Series XIII, so we will get to see more of the lives of the emergency room staff and doctors of Chicago’s County General Hospital. There is Babylon 5, where the Earth Alliance has placed a massive space station into orbit around a planet in a neutral corner of a distant galaxy to serve as a refuge for anyone seeking sanctuary from the tyranny of the hostile federations that dominate the outermost regions of space.

Nip/Tuck is another of my firm favourites, where hotshot plastic surgeon Christian Troy enjoys all the perks of the successful and growing Miami practice that he shares with his best friend, Sean McNamara. And West Wing, where you get to go behind the scenes and experience the inner workings of the White House in this innovative drama series from Emmy Award winner John Wells always makes for riveting viewing.

When you tune in to WBTV on Virgin Media and BT Vision you will also get to revisit Season 1 of The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air starring loveable Will Smith in his early role in inner city Philadelphia when he is sent to California to live in with his wealthy relatives in the hopes that they will “straighten him out and teach him some good old-fashioned values”.

I’ve been enjoying The OC on E4, and we will get to see OC Series III on Warner Brothers TV where the lives of a group of friends and families have forever been changed by the arrival of an outsider to their affluent ocean-side community of Newport Beach in Orange County, California. When Ryan Atwood was taken in from the streets of Chino by then public defender Sandy Cohen and his wife, Kirsten, the Cohens had no idea how Ryan’s arrival would change their lives and the lives of those around them.

And last but not least you have Supernatural starring Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles when, bound by tragedy and blood to a dangerous other worldly mission, two brothers travel from the Colorado wilderness to the Nebraska farmlands and on to the isolated Wisconsin lakes, encountering creatures that most people believe only exist in folklore, superstition and nightmares.

Monster on Film 4

This TV review was written 2 years, 6 months ago.

Written and directed by Patty Jenkins ‘Monster’ is the startlingly realistic film based on the true story of Aileen Wuornos (Charlize Theron) who worked as a Daytona beach prostitute and became one of America’s most notorious female serial killers.

Christina Ricci and Charlize Theron in Monster

She made her living ’servicing’ truck drivers but after becoming pregnant she soon found a way to earn her money without having to use her body, this involved her convincing the drivers she was going to sleep with them, and when they were in a remote place she would kill them and dispose of the bodies and evidence herself.

She soon began a lesbian relationship with ‘Selby’ (Christina Ricci) and the two of them continued their sickening murder spree together before eventually being caught and Aileen was sentenced to death by electric chair.

The movie stars two of Hollywood’s biggest stars, Charlize Theron and Christina Ricci, both of whom give a fantastic performance in their individual roles.

Charlize Theron is particularly amazing in her performance and you would honestly not even recognise her. She took her role very seriously for the movie, losing weight, working on her voice and accent and changing her personal appearance dramatically. She actually looks disturbing and truly frightening in some scenes and was very deserving of the Oscar that she won for her role.

Christina Ricci was brilliant as the slightly naive and confused Selby, she was a joy to watch as always and like Theron she also changed the way she looks and speaks to make the movie more realistic.

Ultimately this is a great movie for those who enjoy films that are based on real life events. There are several violent and disturbing scenes but this simply adds to the brilliant atmosphere and overall realism of ‘Monster’ as a whole.

Full cast list for the 2003/2004 film Monster: Adam Brown, Annie Corley, Bill Boylan, Brett Rice, Bruce Dern, Bubba Baker, Cannonball, Catherine Mangan, Chad Vaccarino, Chandra Leigh, Charlize Theron, Christian Stokes, Christina Ricci, Cree Ivey, Ed Donovan, Elaine Stebbins, Gene R. Stephenson, Glenn R. Wilder, Jesse Stern, Jim R. Coleman, Kaitlin Riley, Kane Hodder, Khris Gibston, Lee Tergesen, Lori McDonald, Lyllian Barcaski, Magdalena Manville, Marc Macaulay, Marco St. John, Nonalee Davis, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Robb Chamberlain, Romonda Shaver, Rus Blackwell, Scott Wilson, Stephan Jones, T.
